As part of a political strategy process, DBI was founded in 2021 as the central economic developer for Duisburg. Since then, DBI has defined numerous fields of action and initiated pioneering flagship projects to drive forward the city's economic development. In 2024, it was time to take stock and realign the long-term direction of DBI. The "DBI 2025+" strategy process was launched for this purpose. With the close involvement of the shareholders and relevant stakeholders from politics, business and administration, existing fields of action were evaluated and new tasks identified.
Evaluation and updating of the strategy
The evaluation and further development of DBI's strategic direction was awarded to the consulting firm LennardtundBirner. The results show that the strategy from 2020 has been successfully implemented. At the same time, they make it clear that additional measures are required to position Duisburg as a sustainable business location. Four key challenges were identified:
- Further development of the employment and sector structure: the aim is to create high-quality jobs and increase purchasing power in Duisburg.
- Provision of marketable commercial space: Companies should find optimal conditions for settling on commercial sites.
- Strengthening location marketing: Duisburg's economic strengths must be communicated more clearly and effectively.
- Promoting the attractiveness of the city center and secondary centers: The vitality and attractiveness of urban areas must be sustainably strengthened.
Measures and new project areas
DBI will strategically address these challenges and further expand its activities in the following areas:
- Business services: the focus is on digitalization and targeted support for local companies.
- Commercial space development and marketing: New spaces are being developed to enable companies to settle here.
- Location marketing: Innovative campaigns and measures are initiated to position Duisburg more strongly both nationally and internationally.
- City management and district development: The attractiveness of the city center and districts is sustainably promoted through targeted projects.
